What We're Trying To Do
This newly formed social network, established in the spirit of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), brings together like-minded individuals who possess a proactive interest in purchasing the meat they consume directly from local farmers. Sourcing our food from local producers whenever possible is the most socially responsible way to acquire quality, healthful goods and it provides an opportunity to connect with the farmers whose work sustains us.
What do we mean when we say "thoughtful?"
Thoughtful farming employs traditional and humane practices in the raising and slaughter of animals produced for consumption. In most cases, animals have the run of the farm, are sometimes penned but NEVER caged. Virtually none of the practices used on or against animals for the efficiency of factory producers are ever used by the thoughtful farmer. Animals are raised growth hormone, antibiotic and steroid free, and their diets consist mainly of grasses and organic grains and legumes. At Clark Summit Farms in Tomales, CA the pampered pigs are even treated to a diet supplemented with organic whey from the nearby Cowgirl Creamery.
The thoughtful farmer is also committed to responsible stewardship of the land and environment. Balancing resources with an eye to future production is tantamount to sustainability.
How It's Supposed to Work
Here, you can read and join in discussions with others who share a common interest in moving toward a more thoughtful way of procuring the meat we eat. When you see a discussion underway for a purchase, simply chime in as to what your interests are, e.g. “I'm interested in sharing 1/4 of a hog, 1 share of a steer, and 6 chickens. My target date is...” Or, start your own discussion and wait for responses.
When a conversation appears to be moving toward a group purchase, it will be moved to a dedicated discussion, such as "Late July Purchase," where the interested parties can iron out the details of their purchase.
